Growing up you probably had a list of things that your parents assigned each week. Fortunately to your parents, scientists and doctors both agree that children helping out with daily tasks around the house is helpful, not only for the house, but in fundamental development. At My Amazing Maid, we want to make life easier for you and your family by taking care of the house cleaning in whatever way you choose: weekly, monthly, or just one time seasonal deep cleans. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean your kiddos can’t help out a little with age-appropriate cleaning chores.
Here are five age-appropriate cleaning chores kids can do around the house.
Cleaning Chores for Ages 2-3
Cleaning chores for children ages 2 to 3 should be kept very simple. It is important to remember not to be worried about precision or completion in the chores, but their willingness to help. At this age, children are just learning about helping and might not have the total motor skills to complete at an “adult” level. These age-appropriate chores could be items like:
- Picking up toys after play
- Dusting
- Putting dirty clothes in the hamper
- Helping empty the dryer into a basket
- Wiping clean windows (at their reach)
Cleaning Chores for Ages 4-6
Cleaning duties for children ages 4 to 6 can start to be more involved. Like with younger children, it is important to remember not to be worried about precision in the chores, but their willingness to help and using positive reinforcement. At this age, children are capable of helping out more and have more understanding of what chores are. These age-appropriate chores could be items like:
- Making their bed
- Pulling weeds in the garden
- Helping clear the table
- Putting dishes away in the cabinets
- Assisting in loading and unloading the dishwasher
- Watering plants
- Putting dirty clothes in the hamper
Cleaning Chores for Ages 7-9
Chores for children ages 7 to 9 and beyond can start to be more difficult and complex. Older kids can now start tasks and complete them in a timely manner. At this age, children are capable of any of the above chores mentioned as well as being able to physically do more to help and pick up after themselves. These age-appropriate chores could be items like:
- Vacuuming
- Washing dishes
- Taking dogs for walks/feeding/bathing
- Putting away their own laundry
- Cleaning bathrooms
- And any of the above tasks
Some parents implement allowances and other items to reward children for helping around the house. No matter how you decide to reward your children (even if it’s a simple high-five), your reward will definitely be fewer chores around the home. Every parent can agree … that’s a WIN!
